Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

Papilio glaucus

Description:

A common butterfly, native to North America. This one, as I understand it, is female

Habitat:

Semi-wooded backyard.

Notes:

Our yards don't have much in the way of flowers (yet) so I am always surprised to see any butterfly other than small whites and cabbage moths flitting about. It was a delightful surprise when this one came flying up the driveway and landed here to rest. I saw a black swallow tail later the same day as well so perhaps more colorful ones are starting to move in.
