I was rushing due to size of the nest and the number that were photographed. It would be better if this was in the woods not on the house. Glad you confirmed my rushed ID. Grin back at you!

We get these hornets around here as well. Typically I pretty much leave them alone as they won't survive the winter here in Minnesota, but one year we had one in some shrubs only a foot off the ground. I've never seen a nest that low. Since there were some little kids living next door, I warned their parents and that night got rid of the nest.

There are several different paper wasps that will make a nest like this, all tend to be highly aggressive, and the nest should be approached with extreme caution. I have some photos of a hornet ( wasp ) that would make such a nest at this link: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/121...
