Heterodon platirhinos
A very lively hognose snake that was hooded and hissing a lot.
Found by a small creek under a rock in late spring.
This snake was a very cool snake and it was found while looking for scorpions under rocks by a little creek/drainage pond.

Since you know the scientific name, Mitchell, please add it to your spotting. Until you do so, it is considered unidentified. Thanks.

Heterodon platirhinos or Heterodon nasicus??
amazing creatures!
Jemma, they just try to scare of predators by being big (flaring of the neck) and hissing. If that doesn't work, they play dead. Many snakes can and will shake their tail rapidly to hit leaf litter to mimic a rattlesnake, but that isn't super common for this species. They are most noted for just playing dead.
they all like to mimic rattle snakes ,don't they?
