Gold cobblestone lichen

Pleopsidium chlorophanum

Description:

This crustose lichen is characterized by its bright neon yellow color, cracked thallus and lobed margins. Always found in association with other crustose lichens. Grows in a radiating pattern which sometimes merge together to form a large mosaic (pic 5).

Habitat:

Spotted on exposed vertical basalt rock at the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge.
