Dwarf rattlesnake plantain

Goodyera repens

Description:

A specie of terrestrial orchid. Grows close to the ground, rosette about 4-5 inches in diameter. Does not flower (that I know of). Leaves are soft and slightly fuzzy.

Habitat:

I have only found this in on spot - forest floor at the base of mixed hardwoods, but on a slope (elevation about 400'). The soil is rocky and pretty heavy, but given the slope, the drainage is pretty good.

Notes:

There are 3 of them in this spot (trailside). I have been watching them for 5 years - they do not change, and I have not spotted any others ANYWHERE in this sanctuary.
