I know the name elephant ear came to mind, but the leaves look somewhat different from taro.

Some sort of Taro plant. Also called Elephant ears. Colocasia sp.
If I am correct about the ID; this is edible.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colocasia_esculenta
Please also check Xanthosoma sp.
