Anise swallowtail

Papilio zelicaon

Description:

Striking black and yellow butterflies with blue spots on the tail wings. The black pupil that is centered in the red spot is an important ID characteristic when trying to differentiate this species from Papilio machaon oregonius ( Oregon swallowtail). With the Oregon swallowtail the black pupil is not centered.

Habitat:

Spotted at the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge.

Notes:

Found in western North America from British Columbia to the Baja California Peninsula.
