Water Monitor (in water)

Varanus salvator

Description:

Heavy-bodied lizard with a prettily patterned skin.

Habitat:

From my room in an old residential house I could see the attached pond...I woke up to see something swimming...looked like an Anaconda (no legs were visible...no furious paddling but a smooth glide through water, like snakes) to my still sleepy eyes but my camera caught these images of a swimming water monitor...maybe the one I had seen a day earlier.

@Tukup...ah...that is why I vote zoom all the time. HONEST confession some shots taken from closer up and cropped but the swimming shots were from the room.

What a wake-up call Sukanya. That's pretty cool that you could get these shots without leaving your room. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Neil...I usually never get to meet the individuals a second time but I can understand how it would be like meeting an old friend. Thank you for the tips...I will remember.

Both are excellent spottings, Sukanya, and I love your notes. They paint the most wonderful pictures. There are a few monitors around Brisbane that I have met several times over the years, and the have taught me to look for certain features so as to identify an individual animal. I now take a close look at the chin-strap marks on the jaw, and patterns on the tail. Spots on the hind quarters as well. If you can do a comparison, then you can match them. All these differences are like finger prints. Other telltales are scars and battle injuries. It is lovely to meet old friends :) This beautiful fellow I have met quite a few times. I've yet to give him a name, but he is teaching me how to be observant, and I have compared his markings with other goannas to see variations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jes2RaJ-...
