Description:

Smoothstem blazingstar is a perennial herb in the Loasaceae (Loasa) family. It is native to the United States and generally found in the western states. It is widespread and found in rocky or disturbed areas.

Habitat:

This wildflower was found growing in lava rock on the rim of The Big Blowout near Craters of the Moon national monument.

Notes:

The Cheyenne Indians used the roots to treat rheumatism, arthritis, earaches, fevers, mumps, measles and smallpox. The Gosiute, Montana, Mendicino and Paiutes used this plant as well in a variety of ways.

It's really surprising how sticky this plant is. If you rub against it, it will break off and stick to you if it's dry enough.
