Yearling Timber Rattlesnake

Crotalus horridus

Description:

Just a year old, this young snake shows a different patterning than its older counterparts. Still too young to feed on rodents, snakes this size will prey on insects and small vertebrates. Instead of a full-fledged rattle, it has a small button on its tail and sounds more like a bee than a threatening rattlesnake.

Habitat:

Rocky slope/forsest edge habitats

Notes:

Very threatening indeed, this little guy made no move to hide under nearby rocks but stayed in the open, coiling and looking as intimidating as he possibly could...at 10 inches in length it was purely adorable.
