In Southeast Alaska this is known as Bear Bread. Artists use it as a canvas. It is removed from the tree and painted or carved on the white under portion.

In Southeast Alaska we call this Bear Bread. It is a fungus that grows on trees. Here in the Panhandle of Alaska artists use it as a canvas. It is removed from the tree, and painted or carved on the white portion underneath. It stands up naturally from the portion where it is removed from the tree.
