Fish Crow

Corvus ossifragus

Description:

This large stout black bird appeared in the back yard (on an inland canal) in South Florida. The scruffy neck feathers which are more evident in the second photo made me think it was a raven but those are not typically found here. So my next guess is a Fish Crow.

Habitat:

Along an inland fresh water canal across from an abandoned golf couse.

Notes:

The bird is very raucous with a loud lengthy caw-type sound. It acts like it is the ruler of the area and seems to want other animals (including humans) to leave its area. It has no fear of people. It does not seem to eat any of the bird seed I leave out but does not want others to eat it either.

The American Crow and the Fish Crow can both be found in Florida, though I can't tell which one it is from this pic...
