Lobster fungus

Hypomyces lactifluorum

Description:

12 -13 cm. tall.

Habitat:

Floor of dense evergreen forest (Eastern Hemlock and White Pine) in the bottomland of a small stream valley.

Notes:

The lobster fungus is a parasite that grows on mushrooms, turning them a reddish orange color that resembles a cooked lobster. When it is fully developed it is generally impossible to determine the species of the mushroom host.
