Penicillium Mold

Penicillium chrysogenum

Description:

I have an indoor composting bin in my garage to break down waste and go into my garden. I guess things are a little too wet because this morning I discovered some of the branches I had placed in the bin to be broken down had this blue-ish gray mold on it, which I later was able to have a friend indentify as p. chyrosgenum. A harmless form of the penicillium genus, this one gives us lots of helpful medicines like penicillin. It's named as such due to the paintbrush-esque appearance of their spores. Penicillus is Latin for paintbrush.

Habitat:

Found in North America.
