Cane Toad

Rhinella marina

Description:

These guys were huge, larger than my hand. Out in the open they were solitary, but they grouped up in drains like this one. I study primates so I have no idea if they're frogs or toads.

Habitat:

Open areas or drains near tropical forest entrances. Guiana Shield, Suriname.

Oh my. People joked to me before I left for my thesis study to do my research and not spend all my time "licking toads and spacing out." Now I can tell them I actually found the toads that do that. Oh my.

The toxic skin won't affect you unless you have a cut on your hand. Or if you try to eat/lick one, which I do not recommend haha

Thanks for the ID Ashley! And toxic skin! Good thing I didn't go near them...I was dared to touch one!

I believe they are a type of toad.... toads generally have rough "warty" skin, whereas frogs generally have smoother skin. Can't help you with species, however..... ;)
