American coot

Fulica americana

The American coot is also called the mud hen. They are close relatives of the moorhen. Coots are dark-gray to black birds with a bright-white bill and forehead. The legs are yellow-green. At close range you may see a small patch of red on the forehead.

There was a pair of American coots in the springs at Silver Springs State Park in Silver Springs, Florida.
