Variegated Fritillary caterpillar

Euptoieta claudia

Description:

Small dark orange caterpillar with white and black markings. Black spines and head. Feeding on a Violet leaf (which is one of its preferred foods). Adult butterfly is an orangy-brown color with black spots and no silver spangles. Smaller in size for a Fritillary, similar in size to a Buckeye.

Habitat:

Suburban backyard garden.

Notes:

What a surprise I got when I went to plant some raspberry plants. I find this prickly little fellow on the "weed" Violets in the garden area. Dang. I left the caterpillar and the plants on which it was feeding. My first butterfly caterpillar sighting in a long, long time.
