Grass of Parnassus

Parnassia palustris

Description:

A number of species belonging to genus Parnassia (fam Celastraceae) are known as Grass of Parnassus or Bog-Stars. Leaves are basal and heart shaped, while the solitary flowers are white, with greenish delicate veines. In spite of the name, plants known as Parnassias are actually not grasses, but perennial herbaceous dicotyledons.

Habitat:

See in alpine habitat of Jura mountain range, close to the lake 'des Rousses', on rocky escarpments. Flowers from June to September in these areas.

Notes:

Interesting fact - this inspirational name is coming from Parnassus, or Ancient Greek gods' garden, a place of immense beauty.
