Comma Butterfly

Polygonia progne

Description:

When It comes to variations the Comma Butterfly is a pretty consistent other than weight, size or wingspan each separate Comma might have. Comma Butterflies have orange and black spotted wings on top but have a jagged underside of the wing that looks like a leaf. It gets its name off the single white marking on it's underside that looks like a comma. It's main breeding and hibernating habitats are open woodland and wood edges and before it hibernates, it will range more widely in the search for nectar and rotting fruit and can often be seen in gardens and in other habitats. This butterfly can hibernate due to the camouflage the underside of it's wing can give it.

Habitat:

They are normally found in Northern America in open wooded areas or in wood edges but can be found in other creatures habitats like gardens when getting ready to hibernate for the winter.

This beautiful butterfly looks more like a Comma. Here is a link with more information on Monarchs, including images for comparison. https://bugguide.net/node/view/540
