Alder Spittlebug

Clastoptera obtusa

Description:

A very colorful species of Clastoptera with white lightening streaks on the wings. This one was 3 mm in length. This little bug has a wide distribution and quite a bit of variation in the "lightening streak" pattern on the wings. They are listed as feeding on Alder (Alnus spp.), although this one was found on a lamp post. Family Clastopteridae.

Habitat:

Garden lights, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters.
