Hi Doren B! I was hiking in a climax forest composed mostly of virgin hemlock probably 100+ years old. I was struck by the beautiful color and size of the fungi on this rotting tree. The fungus was the size of a platter and a gorgeous red color. The top surface was quite shiny. I looked up Hemlock Varnish Fungus as you suggested and the pictures do look like what I saw, so I think you're right. Thanks!

Do you know what type of tree this was on? Do you have more details about the forest environment?

This looks much like a Hemlock Varnish fungus, but a little more background could result in a positive ID.
