Unidentified Mantidae
This Unidentified Mantidae is a nymph and as you can see in the pictures, its wings are not yet developed. This can make it difficult to identify, but there are some clues which, I think, might be pointing me in the right direction. Firstly, on the Prothorax (thoracic shield) there are some irregularly shaped dark patterns and secondly, when I was trying to take some pictures, this nymph was jumping from one plant to another. Both of these (the thoracic shield markings and the jumping around) are traits which point to Statilia maculata Thunberg,1784. Some years ago, I took some photos of a Mantis which I believe was correctly identified by information provided in a website called insectoid.info and it was also recorded there as present in Luzon, Philippines. Unfortunately the website is defunct and I can no longer be certain of the identification. I might yet be lucky with this mantis, if it hangs around our backyard long enough to grow and display its wings. If I can get pictures of it as an adult, it should make identification easier.
Spotted jumping around the flower beds in our backyard, this afternoon.
I must mention that my first thought on the identification of this mantis was Tenodera fasciata or T. f. fasciata, but the jumping is difficult to ignore and I have seen no information stating that the Tenoderas do much jumping. There is some information on T. fasciata and T. f. fasciata in - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/36...
