Sand wasps

Bembix sp.

Description:

About 12-14 millimeters in body length, males slightly larger. Colored as shown.

Habitat:

First image is female, last image male. Both genders were taking nectar from a lone, blooming saltcedar tree (Tamarix sp.) in a vast open field of degraded shortgrass prairie with yucca, sunflower, prickly-pear cacti, and scattered elm trees.

Notes:

Males also stake out territories and are more apt to be seen sprawled briefly on the ground.
