Harlequin duck

Histrionicus histrionicus

Description:

Colorful marine ducks feeding along a rocky shoreline. They eat molluscs, crustaceans and insects. In the first picture the couple was anticipating the next wave as they stood on a rocky shelf. Once the wave receded they would start diving. If that wasn't successful they dabble in the larger tide pools (pic 5).

Habitat:

Spotted on a rocky beach at Tongue Point.
