A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Datana major
Azalea moth caterpillar. Adults and juvenile-juvenile are more magenta (legs and underside) and yellow in color and adults are larger with the more black and yellow and deeper-red colored head.
I’ve read these caterpillars love the azalea bushes (hence their name) as well as blueberry bushes.
Ive read these caterpillars are harmless to humans; they do not sting and do not bite. Quite colorful and fun to watch. When “disturbed” they snap quickly into raising their posterior and heads upwards into a “U” shape!
