Red-breasted Sapsucker

Sphyrapicus ruber

Description:

Beautiful woodpecker with a red head and a black and white marked back and tail. There is a vertical white stripe down the side.

Habitat:

Pepper tree in the backyard. This species is found along the west coast of the US and Canada. They're also found in extreme southwestern Alaska and northwestern Baja California.

Notes:

Sadly I only have a macro lens but at least I got a photo :)

Yip, I'm in North County Inland so it's much hotter here but still considered San Diego. I do miss the seasons. It was near 90F today and I was dreaming of winter :)

I recently learned something about woodpeckers I thought you might like. They can actually hear grubs through the wood in a tree!!!

Me too! This is only the second time I've seen one and am so happy I had a camera today!
