Mule Deer (Remains)

Odocoileus hemionus

Description:

Particle skeletal remains of a mule deer. Most of the bones were still there.

Habitat:

Foothills

Notes:

I wanted my 100 spotting to be something unique, so I decided to go bone hunting on my lunch break. I hiked along a game trail that I've hiked many times. It follows a gully all the way up the mountain. I noticed the mandible first, which was in plain sight and then I saw the rest of the carcass. I decided to go bone hunting without my dog today (It's rattlesnake season!) ....which always makes me nervous. I don't like going into someone else's dinning room uninvited! Luckily, no one was home!

Wonderful spotting, Emily, and very worthy of your 100th. Do you think this animal was the victim of predation, of a bear or mountain lion perhaps? Are either of those found near Denver? Brilliant photos too! You've managed to capture the macabre essence of death, of an animal that was once very much alive. It looks like a crime scene! Well done!
