Cardinal Flower

Lobelia cardinalis

Bright red flowers, three that fan out and face downwards, two that point upwards. Coming from the center of the flower are the sexual organs and they end in a whitish tip that droops down. Looking at the flower it's not hard to see where the common name comes from. Short blooming period, lasting roughly 6 to 8 weeks.

On the banks of the Lumber River, South Carolina.
