Cardinal Flower

Lobelia cardinalis

Description:

Bright red flowers, three that fan out and face downwards, two that point upwards. Coming from the center of the flower are the sexual organs and they end in a whitish tip that droops down. Looking at the flower it's not hard to see where the common name comes from. Short blooming period, lasting roughly 6 to 8 weeks.

Habitat:

On the banks of the Lumber River, South Carolina.
