European Mantis

Mantis religiosa

Description:

This praying Mantis was large in size. At least 3 to 4 inches long and brownish in color. i have usually seen green colored mantises. So this is something new for me. it was large enough to bring down a hummingbird or even a lizard. It probably was under the deck since I could see cob webs on it. (pic2 and 3). http://bugguide.net/node/view/609955

Notes:

. Mantises take on green or brown shades to blend in with the background.

It was rather big and it was eyeing the hummingbirds at the feeder. It disappeared overnite!

That is a really big praying mantis. We have large green praying mantis's here [Kerala, India] but I have never seen a brown one so big.
