Hummingbird Moth

Hemaris thysbe

Description:

Brown, stocky body with a square fuzzy tail. Black bandings on body. Wings have clear areas. Fuzzy antenna. Wings beat fast similar to hummingbird. Probiscus extends into the flower for nectar.

Habitat:

Forest edges, meadows and cultivated flower gardens. They are attracted to the butterfly bush in my garden.

Notes:

Fascinating little creatures! When first seen, they appear to be a very large, very fast bug. Their movements are fast as they dart from flower to flower hunting nectar.
