Verreaux's (Black) Eagle

Aquila verreauxii

Description:

A large eagle that is pretty much all black with a white 'V' on the back and pale flannels in the outer wing. Preys on Rock hyrax and nests on cliff edges. We suspect that this is a juvenile (plumage is changing from mottled brown) that is searching for food in the isolated ridge called Randpark Ridge where rock hyrax (or locally 'dassie') are prolific. The nest is in the Walter Sisulu Botanical gardens. This specimen was seen right next to the road - a rare sighting in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg

Habitat:

Mountainous country
