Black swallowtail (male)

Papilio polyxenes

Description:

I was surprised to find this butterfly so early in the season. The black swallowtail has a 3-4 inch wingspan. Males have larger broken yellow bands than females. The blue color is more prominent in females. Females are larger than males. The lifespan of adults is approximately one week.

Habitat:

Spotted at a forest edge near Millwood Lake in southwest Arkansas.

Notes:

The Black swallowtail is New Jersey and Oklahoma’s state butterfly. Adults will nectar on plants like thistles, clover, phlox, and milkweed.
