Buteo swainsoni
Open fields close to foothills.
I went back to check on the fledging Swainson's hawks today. Two of the 3 babies were no where to be found. However, one of the 3 sibling decided to stick around. He had left his nest and his tree and was on a street lamp less then 4 feet away from the nest. He was still making food cries and mom and dad were hunting prairie dogs near by. You can see him clumsily testing out his new wings in the pictures above! The fledglings can be seen in the tree and nest a few days earlier here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/124...

Thank you Telse! I hope he and his siblings made the long journey to their winter grounds in Argentina safely! His parents have been nesting in the area for a few years now, so they are apparently accomplished migrators!
Very nice!
Thank you Ava! He was a goofy one!
Very neat series.
Thanks Jeannette and Nuwan! I love that without the story this could be just another picture of a hawk landing/flying/taking off. I think the story gives the photo more context and therefore makes it a little more interesting!
Great captures :)
great timing !!
Thank you Satyen!
Fantastic series Emily!
Thank you Cindy and Tishanne!
Wonderful,beautiful share,thank you.
Awesome series and story!
No doubt NC! I should drive by tomorrow and see if he is still around. I bet he's gone by now...I wonder. Thank you Karen!
Great photo & story Emily!
She was trying to attract him to fly most certainly! He's almost ready.
Thanks Noah Citizen! This one might have been a mama's boy! She flew overhead several times while she was hunting and he would watch her intently and cry for dinner!
Ready? Set... The 2 other siblings certainly did not wait for the 3rd one to go. Nice series and follow up for the story.
