Pteropus giganteus
From far and when they are at rest, these large bats look like tightly furled umbrellas...the photos were not interesting. But then one bat flew in ( after a late night out...it was about 10 AM and other honest bats were fast asleep) and did a lot of acrobatics which was a joy to watch. I noticed that some bats swung gently as they hung upside down...and I had to delete many photos because I do not think back of the head makes a good photo. The last one is of a different individual but of the same colony and taken at the same time. The colour of the fur is a lovely rich chestnut and the skin is black.
The tall trees near Zeerut bridge just as the Zoo Campus ends. It is bang opposite the 5 Star Taj Bengal Hotel. The road is a busy thoroughfare near the National Library.
The colony used to be much larger when we were kids...but still... I spotted about 20 of these roosting in their old haunts. May they livelong and prosper.

these are hard to photograph!
Thanks, venusflytrap2000. More like a rediscovery :) I was happy they are still there. Far fewer in number than I remember from my childhood.
beautiful series and nice find, sukanya!
Thanks, MariadB, I have seen this colony grow smaller and smaller over the years...it is still hanging on (literally too) and that is a small joy.
Very nice series and I enjoyed reading your description and notes with some humor thrown in!
