Great Crested Grebe

Podiceps cristatus

Description:

The Great Crested Grebe is an elegant waterbird, with ornate head plumes which led to it being almost hunted to extinction in the UK. This species shows a spectacular head-to-head courtship where the two partners curtsy to each other whilst shaking their heads.

Habitat:

Lake shore, near marina. A wintering location for these birds; they will return to nesting areas in reeds at springtime.

Notes:

2 different individuals, part of a group of about 20. The first individual in pictures 1 and 2 is transitioning out of winter plumage. The individual in picture 3 already shows full breading plumage.
