this one had killed an earth worm and was apparently eating it slowly.

Nice spot. This is an Eastern Yellowjacket (Vespula maculifrons). Adults feed on nectar & other liquids, so what you see here is an adult chewing up pieces of the prey that will be taken back to the colony to feed to the young :)
