Um dos maiores lagartos do brasil, é o mais pesado deles. Um exemplar com o tamanho máximo da espécie, que é de 140 cm de comprimento, pode pesar quase 5 kg. Só pesa tanto pois é um lagarto terrestre, e raramente sobe em árvores depois de atingir a maturidade. Ao atingir um certo tamanho, o Teiú se torna um animal agressivo e voraz, comendo desde frutas e insetos até roedores, aves e outros répteis de menor porte. Quando se sente ameaçado, pode desferir mordidas dolorosas e fortes golpes com a cauda semelhante a um chicote. Na América do sul, ocupa um nicho ecológico semelhante ao ocupado na África e Ásia por lagartos varanídeos, como o monitor da savana (Varanus exantematicus).___(English)___One of the largest lizards of Brazil, is the heaviest of them.
