Common Evening Brown

Melanitis leda leda

Description:

Nymphalidae; Satyrinae; Melanitis leda leda Linnaeus 1758. These butterflies have long been a favourite of mine. When I first became seriously interested in biodiversity, just a few years ago, this was one of the butterflies which caught my attention. I was very happy snapping away at them with my "point and shoot" pocket camera, because they are quite beautiful. Once I started finding out about Evening Browns, Common Evening Browns, Dry Season forms, Wet Season forms (and my goodness, there is even a Bamboo Tree Brown), things became a little more complicated. Gradually, I started realising that they are all magnificent and getting to know a little about them is a wonderful hobby. Despite my growing interest in many of these Browns (Satyrinae), the good old Common Evening Brown is still a firm favourite. I never get tired of seeing them in the rice fields. Understandably, the farmers don't quite feel the same affection for them.

Habitat:

Spotted in grasses in our backyard, near the edge of a rice field where they are always plentiful, especially towards the end of the rice growing season.
