Thanks so much! We've seen another larger woodpecker around as well with red plumage on his head. He hasn't stayed long enough to grab a pick yet.

Nice spotting. There is a similar species, the downy woodpecker which looks similar, but is much smaller. The bill is also diagnostic, the bill of the hairy woodpecker is longer.
