This looks like a Tarantula home. It was 2 to 3 inches wide.I saw this on the ground in the Canyon. The funnel web spiders that I have seen so far ,do not have such huge homes.

Rob ,you could be right. We have lots of Tarantulas on Mt Diablo and Sept , OCt is Tarantula season.
i can ask one of the rangers. This hole was at least 3 inches. Isn't that wide for a funnel web spider?
