Crested Caracara

Caracara cheriway

Description:

Vagrant bird but has been sighted a few times over the years. Confirmed by other birders and seen through a scope.
Flat head with crest, black crest and covering the eyes. White neck and brown body. Long legs with feathers covering top half. Legs are orange-yellow. Fleshy orange-yellow face and pale beak. Rump is white and top half of tail is gray leading to black ends. When flying you can white patches on the end of the wings.

Habitat:

Open fields and hillsides

Notes:

Sorry about the bad quality. The bird was far out in a private field eating off a dead cow. During our observation, the bird was chasing a Golden Eagle. It was also spotted hunting as well as eating off the dead cow.

Wow! We had a very rare Crested Caracara in Maricopa Co AZ also, it left before other people could see it.
