Bald-faced Hornet

Dolichovespula maculata

Description:

Black color with light yellow spots..a wasp or hornet of some sort..

Habitat:

On the cherry tree in the back yard and with a huge paper nest the size of a volleyball.

Notes:

This one came down after I sprayed and bit the grass blade you can still see in its mandibles.. The stinger is half out for a shot to whatever was close...

I did not see their nest until my son pointed it out.. I took care of them quick with some dielectric type of spray.. I have a 3 year old daughter who loves the yard..
I know of their type, I just had no time to research the species.

Hi Nicholas, this is a Bald-faced hornet. Take care around the nest, as these are very aggressive and will attack repeatedly anything that invades their space.
