European Golden Plover (juvenile)

Description:

This plover gets its name from the lovely golden hue in the feathers on its back. In full grown adults, the face, breast and underside are black with a white border, but I think this is a juvenile so you can just see the beginnings of the black on its belly. I think these pictures show just how their plumage would have evolved - I almost missed this guy wading through the seaweed!

Habitat:

In general, they're found more on heathland and meadows, but I found this one walking around on the sandy/shingle beaches of a bay. They spend the summer in places like Iceland, but we get golden plovers sometimes on the estuary near my house in the UK! It was cool to see them in the summer.

Notes:

In Europe, it is referred to simply as "golden plover", but as there is also an American and Pacific golden plover, it's necessary to stipulate that this is the European one! I found this one in Reykjavik, Iceland.
