Rusty Tussock Moth or Vapouror

Orgyia antiqua

Description:

Rusty tussock moth or Vapourer, Schlehen-Bürstenspinner (Gynaephora antiqua or Orgyia antiqua) on the wall of my house, Langnau im Emmental, Emmental, Kanton Bern, Switzerland

Habitat:

Caterpillar: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/128...

Notes:

Interesting fact: This moth shows a sexual dimorphism. The male is quite a beautiful brownish moth, whereas the female is inconspicious. And most important: The female is flightless. She remains directly at her cocoon, waiting for just one male attracted by pheromones. She shortly dies after having laid her eggs next to the old cocoon. The male is diurnal and flies during the mating period quite impetously around.
