Obscure Bird Grasshopper

Schistocerca obscura

Description:

Schistocerca, commonly called bird grasshoppers, is a genus of grasshoppers, many of which swarm as locusts. The Obscure Bird Grasshopper has a long stripe down its back and dark blue black rear legs. They are folded closed in this photo.

Habitat:

Wildlife habitat garden with many native plants and grasses that these hoppers have eaten to shreds.

Notes:

Not swarming, just an abundance this year. The good news is that the frass (poop) that they leave after eating all the plants is an excellent fertilizer, high in nitrogen, so the garden can recover.
