Amazonian White-lipped Frog

Leptodactylus mystaceus

Description:

This is a medium sized (5-6 cm) brown or gray frog with a dark stripe from the tip of the nose through the bottom half of the eye to the back of the shoulder. It has a dorsolateral fold on each side of the dorsum and the legs have dark bars across them.

Habitat:

A very common frog in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador. This was a baby (6 cm) that I found @20:30 in the grass alongside a little used trail.

Notes:

Sometimes these can be found near water by the dozens. This was a loner a long way from a body of water, but with all the rain here (20 ft per year) they are never far from water.
