Hey rsmithing...thanks for the comment! Are you spotting moths in Winston-Salem?
Congratulations, Claire, for a great spotting of a stunning moth. Way to go!
Woolly Mammoth? More like wooly moth! What a find! And hello from a fellow Tar Heel in Winston-Salem.
Thanks so much Yasser for SOTD for Moth week...and thanks for all the kind comments....I almost overlooked this moth...it was small a quite a distance from the light.
Yay for SOTD! Congratulations! Yes, I did notice most of the images from Bugguide are not nearly as brightly colored as your moth. I often wonder what determines the color and pattern differences (besides genetics). Does it matter what they ate as caterpillars? Temperature? Nature is truly wonderous!
ChunXingWong, it's interesting how another spotting can help lead to an ID that you have been looking for. I have had that happen a couple of times for my own spottings.
Great work, ForestDragon.
I have been waiting for the ID of this moth genus for years.
Congrats Claire! This colorful and shaggy moth has been chosen as Spotting of the Day for Moth Week 2012! We loved the colors and the texture and we hope to see more moth spottings from you!
"This Wavy-lined Heterocampa and its interesting patterns can be found on the east coast of the US. "
