Good shot Daniel! Notice the halteres (little balls on sticks) just behind the wings. These make it a real fly. (They are the evolutionary remains of the second set of wings) Similar to your spotting is this one on the other side of the planet... http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/127...

This isn't a mosquito, but it is related to them. It's a true fly and they appear in huge numbers each spring.
