Neon Cuckoo Bee

Thyreus wallacei

Description:

Thyreus wallacei (Cockerell, 1905) (Apidae; Apinae; Melectini). The Neon Cuckoo Bee is a black bee with metallic blue spots (glittering blue hairs) on the back and sides. Females of Cuckoo Bees do not construct their own nests. The Cuckoo Bees mimic the Cuckoo Birds in their kleptoparasitic behavior of laying their eggs in the nests of other oblivious bees, using the other bees to do the work of raising their young for them. The Cuckoo Bee lays an egg in the burrow of the Blue-banded Bee (Amegilla spp.). When the Cuckoo Bee egg hatches, it feeds on the Amegilla bee egg or larvae.

Habitat:

Backyard.
