bloody tooth mushroom

Hydnellum peckii

Description:

Inedible mushroom that vaguely resembles the very edible hedgehog, but with drops of red fluid on top. Underneath, the gills are little tubes that resemble hair, spikes or "teeth"

Habitat:

coastal rainforest

Notes:

My favorite to see and photograph. Usually I see them all dried up :(

Usually I find them either dried up and blackish, or rotting and very sticky/slimy. This was quite a find in my book. It was a great day for mushroom photography, as I also found the Sarcodan in the same area... and about 3 quarts of chanterelles

One of their other common names is strawberries and cream(for the Zombie apocolypse, maybe!)
